We joined an Ultimate Frisbee team

A few months ago David announced he had signed us up to play in an Ultimate Frisbee summer league.  Hooray?  Come to find out they didn't need anymore guys, but if you signed up with a girl they would let a guy join.  I was that lucky girl.

David played intermural Frisbee in college.  For the record, I did not.

We went to the training night and it was clear that I was a beginner and that David wasn't as fast as he used to be in college.  But, the coaches still allowed us to play and we were put on the Ugly Duckling team.  (Each team name was after a mathmatical theorem.  I don't know why.  I still don't know what the "Ugly Duckling" theorem is either.)

Every Friday night for the last 3 months we would put on our yellow shirts, drive down to Magnuson Park in Seattle and play a game.

David pulled his hamstring the first game, but that didn't keep him from playing - just not running as fast.

We only lost one game during the season and were ranked #1 going into playoffs!

On the way to the first of 3 playoff games, we got stuck for 30 mins on the 520 bridge while it went up for boats.  So we jumped on the other side and started getting warmed up.

Every team played 3 games in the finals regardless of winning or losing.
You just advanced further in the bracket if you won.  We won our first two games and on Aug. 16 we won the Championship game!  David even caught the winning pass with just a toe over the line.

Bonus, David and I were awarded the "Spirit of the Game" Frisbee
by our team captain Steven.  We now have a life-time supply of frisbees.

Next year, I'll get David a 2nd yellow shirt so when it doesn't get washed before the next game we don't have to "air it out" on the drive.

A few interesting facts about Ultimate Frisbee:
  • You keep score using shoes. You turn it horizontal to represent 5 points.
  • First team to 15 points wins.
  • You make a cheer for the opposing team at the end of the game.  David was Cheer Captain.
  • Games last about 1 1/2- 2 hours.
  • You have to have 3 girls and 4 boys on the field
  • They use words like "stack", "cup defense" and "handler"

  1. Looks like fun! And by the way I'm a mathematician and I've not heard of the Ugly Duckling Theorem.
